Sony up to it's old tricks
Once again Sony is up to it's old tricks. For years they have not played well with others, instead of adopting to the CF or SD card format they have instead used their own Memory Stick Format. To further this, this week Sony launched it's own online content system. And more importantly their new PSP handheld will only play movies and music downloaded from this service. From here they can cut consumer choice out of the loop forever.
The service called Sony Connect, is to compete with Apple's leading iTunes service. The tracks use the MagicGate DRM copy-protection scheme and will work only with Sony Memory Stick-compatible devices including VAIO computers, CLIE PDAs, MiniDisc, CD and Walkman products.
The service uses Sony's SonicStage software and works with Windows 98SE-XP PCs only. Once again cutting the Linux and Mac people out of the loop? Why, because Sony is in bed with M$ and doesn't sell any Linux software or PC's. More importantly their PSP handheld will only play movies and music downloaded from this service.
