Consoles developing too fast?

I just read an article which summarized a rant which Nintendo Europe's boss, David Gosen, gave during the ELSPA Games Summit in London. He poses some interesting viewpoints regarding game and console development.

In it he blasts M$ for pushing too hard to release X2 when X1 is still fresh. It hasn't even reached maturity according to Gosen. The same can be said for the other consoles as well he claims. The race to be the first to release the next gen console is what's driving the current competition and he says that's the wrong path to take.

In addition he claims that M$'s push to offer more and more mature games is alienating a whole market. Namely the tweens. I have to agree with Gosen here. Outside of the 30 somethings which M$ is targetting with games like the grand theft auto series, tweens offer the next most profitable market. Tweens have lots of disposible income (thanks to their parents). From a purely marketing point of view, it makes sense to make lighter games aimed at this group as they will likely spend the money on them.

Further, girl gamers are growing as a group, yet most games are focused on boys. Not too many girls like the shoot em up style of game play, yet there isn't much else out there.

Back to Gosen's point about M$ pushing mature games. A list of recent releases seems to prove his point: "The Punisher", "Leisure Suit Larry", "Destroy All Humans!", "Mercenaries", "Shellshock:Nam '67" to name just a few are all geared to a more mature audience. In fact on a whole list of recent releases the only one that jumps out at me as being for a broader audience is the latest Harry Potter title "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban."

Whether Gosen's comments will have any impact on future game development is unclear at this time. But given the dollars spent on Xbox last years, due in large part to those more mature titles, I doubt this speech will have much of an impact.
