Undercover Work

Early next week we plan to leave the comfort of the warehouse and send one of our reporters down to the Austin Game Conference. While there we will try and attend both days depending on our budget. But we will definetly check out the Programming the PSP meeting and hopefully attend the Mobile and Wireless Design meetings as well. Should be a good time and hopefully we can bring back some exclusives...

For our Tea-Swilling Pals over the Pond

The Christmas console battle has started early with M$ and $ony both slashing their console price tags.

The announcements came at the Leipzig Games Convention. The cuts mean an Xbox will cost 99.99 from 27 August, and a PS2 will be 104.99 immediately.

In the UK, the PS2 has continued to outsell the Xbox over the summer.

Sony is expected to show off its new console at the E3 video games show in LA next year. Good stuff.....

Nintendo calls in the Jackals

Or the lawyers as some people call them. Check out this nice little story from our tea-swilling friends over at the Register. Looks like Nintendo has been working with the patent police to get control over a patent it filed in 1999. The patent gives ownership of key online multi-player gaming facilities, including player league tables, voice communications and online gaming host services. Sound a little like Xbox Live anyone???

M$ Hops into Bed with EA

According to an email we got today M$ has dropped team-sports games "NFL Fever," "NHL Rivals" and "NBA Inside Drive" for the company's Xbox video game console. And in fact has disbanded the studio that made those games. All we have to say is good move M$. You might be able to fight Sony and Nintendo but no one fights EA and wins...talk about a company with shaky corporate tatics. But that is a topic for another day.

Buy THIS Bill Gates!

Looks like Nintendo is doing just fine. Everyone and their mom had predicted the death of the GameCube but according to this report Nintendo achieved a net income of $202m 96.5 per cent up on Q2 2003's $103m. Quite a big increase from the Big N. They credit this rise due to slashing the price of their GameCube console down and selling more GBA units than ever. Looks like some 2.3m GBA were sold during Q2 2004. Wow!

Classic Console Gaming from 1958

Those nerds over their at Slashdot posted a story about this retro-1950's console. It's based on a 1950's era TV set. It was built to eventually house an experimental computer being produced by Sun Labs, but the supercharged piece made its debut at their recent Open House held at the Computer History Museum. Cool stuff. The game being shown is called MBA action 2004...

Ouch! 199.99 for the Nintendo DS?

That's right. According to some sites that are taking pre-orders the "Kid-Friendly" Nintendo DS is going to be priced at $199.99. Hey Nintendo I know this thing will sell like ganbusters. But how is the price of $200.00 supposed to be kid friendly? According to Ebgames that is not the confirmed final price just yet.....but c'mon! That seems pricey to me!

M$ Will not only own the world...

But they will know where exactly you are in it.

Yes folks, it's about time for another M$ rant. I haven' t done one in a while so I thought it was time.

A recent news article came across my desk the other day and while it has great implications for businesses such as couriers and moving companies, the real implications for you and me are scary.

Sony uses new technology in PS3

Sony selects Blu-ray for PlayStation 3

Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 3 will ship with a Blu-ray optical drive.

At this stage, it's not clear whether the console will feature a read-only unit or allow users to record video onto the blue-laser medium too. It's certainly tempting to view the PS3 as more of a successor to the poorly received PSX than the PS2 per se.

Bill wants Nintendo?

Slashdot | Microsoft Lusts Nintendo, To Little Avail

"The online version of Forbes Magazine says that Bill Gates has expressed an interest in buying Nintendo from Japanese billionaire Hiroshi Yamauchi." Though this news seems to have been part of a theoretical 'what if' question, the story reports: "'If Hiroshi Yamauchi phones me up, i will pick up at once,' Gates told WirtschaftsWoche magazine on the sidelines of an analyst conference."

Now C'Mon! The Halo 2 Marketing team is really taking this too far. I mean I understand the cool hacked Web site but now they have the guts to start selling this T-Shirt. We get it! The Halo 2 Demo is going to be released in August. Anyway it's clearly a marketing schtick at this point. But a good one indeed.
