M$ Will not only own the world...
But they will know where exactly you are in it.
Yes folks, it's about time for another M$ rant. I haven' t done one in a while so I thought it was time.
A recent news article came across my desk the other day and while it has great implications for businesses such as couriers and moving companies, the real implications for you and me are scary.
I'm talking about M$'s new Microsoft MapPoint Web Service 3.5. This little puppy has the ability to connect to a GPS or other connected device and use the information to track where you are.
Using GPS it can tell where you are within a couple feet of your actual location. But wait it doesn't stop there.
"I don't have GPS so how does this affect me?" Well, if you carry a cell, they can triangulate your coordinates to within 30 feet. Or if it's a web enabled PDA, same deal. If you can broadcast and recieve wirelessly you can be tracked.
Before you know it M$ will be serving spam ads to your cell phone based on where you are. Strolling downtown and you walk by a theater? All of a sudden your phone rings and your are txt messaged all the shows currently playing. Good information, but when they also tack on the local restaraunt specials, prices for flowers at the florist down the street and even hotel rates, it gets a little much.
So be prepared people, soon the only way to remain truly anonymous will be to drop all forms of communication except that which we were born with.
