Handheld gaming...Again
Sorry, but a thought has been bugging me so I had to get it out. And it makes it easier when you have a place to put it. Of course it does relate to gaming, but the handheld variety.
For some reason I have been hearing a lot about handheld/portable gaming these past few days. I don't know if it's becuase I'm more sensitive to it or becuase there really is something there. So I started thinking.
When will M$ move into the handheld market?
I came across a news article that says that Qualcomm was going to spend $800 million developing a wireless broadband network over the next 5 years.
But what does that have to do with handheld gaming? Lots
By that time, your PSP or whatever it will be called won't just be a gaming console, it will also be an MP3 player, a digital radio, even a movie player. Essentially, by that time gaming will only be part of what these machines will do.
As technology improves, and bandwidth becomes a cheap commodity not only will you be able to wirelessly play against your friend who's 3000 miles away, but you will be able to stream movies and music to your handheld, as well as recieve phone calls, position yourself (via GPS) and find the nearest Starbucks to satisfy your caffeine fix for the day.
And I haven't even got into the marketing potential of these things.
It will be like my article of a few days ago. Imagine walking by 7-11 and having it serve you ads.
This is why I wonder when M$ will get into it? We already know they want to make money and dominate the market, so will they wait until more people are comfortable with wireless, or will they attempt to enter the market early to dominate?
And what will a M$ handheld look like? Will it be a mini X-box or something else?
It's too soon to tell when or even if they will enter the market, but if I were a betting man, I'd put my money on it.
