the future of handheld gaming?

Gizmondo recently released it's flavor of handheld console in the UK. It looks pretty nice. It not only allows you to play games (and even play against others via a wireless connection) but it also has built in GPS. Future versions are purported to have built in cell phones as well.

This all sounds great, but recently I interviewed an insider at a company which develops components for this and other similar handhelds and what he told me kinda scares me.

The goal of these new handhelds (and cell phones and virtually every other bluetooth or GPS enabled wireless device) will be to serve you advertising.

Why do you think they can afford to sell these units so cheaply? The games will be great quality - all new titles, but dirt cheap when considering the development time involved.

And what if companies like Gizmondo can make money on the ads? Do you think Nintendo and the others will be far behind? You can bet that M$ will monetize on this new revenue stream.

Not only will the wireless world be a victim of advertising but there are many games out there already (and more in development) which have built in advertising. It's subtle to be sure, you might see a Pepsi billboard in your favorite driving game, but it will become more and more visible as time goes on.

Lets face it, how do these "traditional" companies reach the next generation consumers? People between the ages of 9 and 19? They spend less time in front of a TV and more time gaming. What better way to reach them then to insert an ad or 12 in their favorite game?

Mark my words, over the next 2 years, the advertising in games - both wireless and wired - will grow significantly. Before you know it, games will have trailers just like in the movie theaters.

Walking by 7-11 one day you're PSP will beep at you, and you will recieve a text message from the store saying "slurpies just 79 cents when you buy one of these chocolate bars..."

It truly is going to be a wireless world that we live in - one driven by advertising and money.
