Download video to your PSP

Sony Communication Network launched a Web portal today through which owners of the PSP can download video clips.

The site offers at launch a small selection of movie previews, animated cartoons, entertainment, digests of TV dramas, music, lifestyle programming, and sports. Content is initially available at no cost.

The service is currently available to anyone with a user ID and password for SCN's So-Net portal. Users can sign up on the Portable TV home page, and membership is not restricted by geography or nationality, although the service and sign-up is available only in Japanese, said Yoshio Takushima, chief of SCN's mobile TV service group.

Launch of the site coincides with the release of a software update for the PSP that adds features required for the service. These new features include a Web browser and support for the MPEG4 AVC video codec and AAC audio codec in which the clips are encoded. The downloaded video files require a Memory Stick Duo memory card for storage.

Two Ways to Use

Users will be able to access and download clips in two ways, said Takushima at a Tokyo news conference.

The first way is directly from the PSP using the newly added Web browser and the wireless LAN adapter, he said.

The second option is to download via PC. With this method the PSP needs to be attached to the PC via a USB cable so that the file can be written directly onto the PSP's Memory Stick. As protection against piracy, the video is not stored on the PC.

When the paid service starts, users will be required to provide credit card details, and SCN hasn't yet decided if it will restrict the purchase of premium content to only those with a Japanese card.

Gameboy's video capabilities

The Motley Fool is reporting that pretty soon you will be able to not only watch cartoons on your GBA, but also full length movies.

The company which developed the technology now has the rights to distribute Shrek and Shark Tales to name just a couple of the soon to be released title.

Of course, it will be interesting to see how this compares to something like, oh say the PSP's video?

Coming to a video game near you - embedded video ads

We've seen this one coming for a while, but it's now confirmed. A New York company called Massive has been working on an ad delivery platform which will serve video ads inside your favorite online games.

Up until now, ads have been static - like billboards - but the company has spent the past year perfecting its video ad delivery system.

They caused a stir a year ago when they started offering the static ads.

"These ads are particularly suitable for Hollywood studios wanting to promote movies a week before their release date or retailers promoting holiday sales", Massive Chief Executive Mitchell Davis says. He says Massive has sold space to 35 advertisers, including Paramount Pictures.

Too bad they don't lower the price on some of these games now that we have to put up with ads now.

Microsoft Previews Xbox 360 Games

I got this from Yahoo news today:

"Microsoft showed in Tokyo on Monday some of the latest previews of games being worked on for its
Xbox 360 console. The Xbox 360 is scheduled to launch in Japan, North America, and Europe before the end of this year.
Adblock

"Headlining the game previews at the event was Bizarre Creations' "Project Gotham Racing 3." The Liverpool, England, games house showed a stunning preview that was quite unlike any current computer game in terms of graphics, sound, and level of detail.

"The game includes a number of circuits based on real streets in real cities. Shown on Monday were clips from New York and Tokyo, the latter of which is based on the city's Shinjuku district and looked just like the real thing thanks partly to the console's high-definition graphics and partly to the use of thousands of reference photos that enable the game to include the same shops, road signs, buildings, and other features as the real Shinjuku.

"The higher performance hardware enables improvements in this and other games. Nick Davies, design manager at Bizarre, said each car is made up of 80,000 polygons versus 10,000 in previous generation games. It also enables the company to offer authentic engine noise for 80 types of car.

"Another groundbreaking feature is Gotham TV. Looking just like TV coverage of a motor race, Gotham TV allows users the ability to watch race replays of their own races--but it doesn't stop there. Through the Xbox Live online service, users can watch live races being played by other people and switch between circuit cameras, in-car cameras, and views from helicopters for a totally new experience.
Also on Display

"Another game based on the streets of Tokyo, Genki's Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway Battle, also displayed an impressive amount of realism and a level of graphics that, like Bizarre's "Project Gotham Racing 3" will soon make existing console games look tired by comparison. One other racing game under development, Namco's "Ridge Racer 6," was mentioned but only a handful of still images of cars were displayed.

"Other big names games on show included "N3 Ninety Nine Nights," the action strategy game co-produced by Tetsuya Mizuguchi of Q Entertainment and Lee Sang-Youn of Phantagram. The two showed video of live game play of the game and revealed some of the characters. They also named two of them: a brother and sister called Inphyy and Aspharr.

"Yoshiki Okamoto from Game Republic took the stage to reveal details of a new title he's working on. Called "Every Party" (the title is a shortened version of 'everybody's party') the game attempts to meld the world of board games with that of video games. Character design was by popular Japanese designer Momoko Sakura, who is known to millions in Japan for the "Chibi Maruko Chan" TV animation series. It may not excite North American or European audiences but it's the kind of game that could go down well in the local market and help Microsoft's chances in Japan.

"Among action titles several were shown including Namco's "Frame City Killer" and Capcom's "Dead Rising," both of which contained large amounts of death and destruction. The latter title perhaps more than the former because the vast majority of characters are zombies awoken from the dead.

"Several sports games were also shown, including Konami's soccer game "Winning Eleven," women's wrestling game "Rumble Roses XX" and professional baseball title "Proyakyu Spirits." Namco also showed short clips from its "Love Football." And for beach volleyball fans everywhere, Tecmo said it is working on "Dead of Alive Xtreme 2" that should see Kasumi-chan and her friends playing volleyball and an unspecified number of other sports--presumably in bikinis.

"Tecmo is also producing "Dead or Alive 4" and "Dead or Alive Code: Cronus" for the Xbox 360 and demonstrated the former of the two titles at Monday's event.

Another PSP browser - but wait its from Sony!

Sony officials Thursday said the company will release a software upgrade that will let the PSP surf the Web without a cumbersome software trick.

The free software patch will be available next week in Japan, said Ken Kutaragi, chief executive of Sony Corp.'s game unit.

Up until now, without a homebrew patch, the only way to surf has been to modify a limited browsing feature in the racing game "Wipeout Pure."

No mention on if/when the patch will be available elsewhere.

Playing video games can be good for you!

The next time someone tells you you better "shut that thing off or I'm going to throw it out the window." Tell them that your keeping yourself healthy.

An article published in the British Medical journal (BMJ) found that playing games "can distract the player from the sensation of pain, a strategy that has been reported and evaluated among paediatric patients".

"Such games focus attention away from potential discomfort and, unlike more traditional therapeutic activities, they do not rely on passive movements and sometimes painful manipulation of the limbs,"

So, to avoid painful limb manipulation, play on!

Marvel characters on Xbox

Microsoft said today that it entered an exclusive licensing deal with Marvel Enterprises Inc. to use the comic book company's super hero characters in online multiplayer games for its Xbox system.

No details of the deal were disclosed, nor which characters would be used, however Marvel owns the rights to thousands of comic book characters including Spider-Man, X-Men, Daredevil and the Hulk.

I can just imagine it now - marvel universe online. Could be a great game as long as its done right.

PS3 - more features cut

from Gizmodo:

"First they kill the HD, then they kill the router. The PS3 was originally supposed to have three Ethernet ports “for the kids” but Sony has pulled the ports in hopes of reducing the already expensive device.

See, it’s not really about game consoles anymore. These things are supposed to be “home entertainment centers” with downloadable content, video playback, and other cool stuff. By stripping pieces of the PS3 over time, Sony is scaring away the less hardcore market who might consider buying an XBox 360 for DVR/Media Center features. However, Sony can do whatever it wants: the die-hard gamers will still buy the PS3 and turn Blu-Ray into a new standard. "

yet more PSP hacks

Another day, another PSP hack. The madmen at PSPUpdates.com posted PVNC v1.1, a VNC client for the PSP that allows you to connect to and control other computers running a VNC server. The program recreates the desktop of a remote computer on your PSP screen, a boon for the busy sysadmin who doesn’t want to leave the toilet stall where he/she is playing Lumines to check on a server.

In related news, they’ve also created a nice FTP client for downloading non-pirated ISOs. Non-pirated. Remember that.
