The PS3 - More than your average console

NextGen has a great article speculating on the Revolution.

In it, the author speculates on what the PS3 really will be - will it be just another console or could it be more.

He says that Sony plans to make some announcements in the next few weeks. He further speculates that the company will throw it's support behind blu ray, the next high definition DVD format.

As such, Sony needs the backing of major motion picture studios, which apparently it does have - at least verbally.

This could lead to a real battle over DVD formats if they backs blu ray because HD DVD also has backing. And the movie companies won't want another beta vs. VHS battle.

According to the author, Sony is betting that people won't buy the console for the gaming, instead they'll buy it for the DVD playback - gaming is secondary. And this would be a slap in the face for M$ which rushed to get the 360 out by Christmas.

In any case, he does say "its all speculation" but even if he's partly right, this could be an interesting year. Not only for console gaming but also the movie industry.
