Wii? Rev?? What Next?
Kotaku is floating rumors that Nintendo is out to change the name of it's new console again.
You know the one - it was called "Revolution" and then recently the name was changed to "Wii."
Well when they changed the name to Wii I went WTF??? After all "Revolution" sounds more grown up to me. "Wii" makes me think that it's a kids gaming console. Not only that but the name is kinda flaky overall.
Now Kotaku is saying that "Wii" may have been a big joke after all.
But according to Nintendo there is no impending name change. And really there shouldn't be.
You see, they are exceptional marketers. They know what it takes to sell a product.
And name changes - especially 2 or 3 of them just before the product launches, is a gamble at best.
Think about it. You're Johnny's grandparent and he's asked you for a "Wii" so you go to the local Toys R Us and ask for it - the clerk says "oh you mean (insert new name here)." "No" says grandpa "Johnny wants a Wee."
"I know" says the clerk "but Nintendo recently changed the name again. It's now called (insert new name here)."
Do you think Grandpa is going to fall for that? After all, he's been hosed by unscrupulous electronics salesmen in the past (like when he got an 8 track and they told him it'd last forever). So he knows what he wants is the Wii.
So he's going to go to every store in town looking for the Wii but he isn't going to find it. He's going to be frustrated and heartbroken because all he wants more than anything is to see Johnny's eyes light up as he opens that box to see the new gaming console that he asked for....
You can see how this could be bad for Nintendo so while I bite my tongue every time I say it I have to say - keep the Wii.
