PS3 - the Power Hungry Money Pit

Before we get to the power hungry money pit part, lets take a look at the PS3's latest ad which recently appeared on fox:
Kinda freaky hey? But wait, there's more...
In a recent interview with Sony's Izumi Kawanishi, he announced that Sony hopes to allow the PSP to not only be a remove viewer of PS3 games but also be able to take part in them.
According to this IGN article, "Sony hopes to allow players to play PS3 games remotely via the PSP." That's cool.[
Now on to the money pit part. Recently Sony boss Howard Stringer said the company will need to find profits from other sectors, to offset the costs of PS3, now set to lose the company a whopping $1.7 billion this year. While this may seem like a lot, remember that Sony also had to pay for an expensive battery recall, likely had to set aside money for legal suits relating from that recall, and is a huge company that otherwise makes hundreds of millions (if not billions) of dollars every year. This shouldn't be that hard.
So how power hungry is the PS3? Well according to this article the PS3 sucks up an amazing 380 watts of power, a far cry from the PS2 which sips a mere 45 watts. At 380 watts that's equivalent to most modern computer systems. Ouch.
So what do you get for all that power consumption? Well, if you are like a lot of consumers you may want to know what media the PS3 will play outside of Blu-Ray? Well IGN has an article explaining just that. While the console will play MPEG and MP3 I don't see DivX on the list. C'mon Sony, get with the program. Guess that means if you want DivX you'll have to run down to Wal-Mart and pick up their $39.99 special.
Finally today, we learn that Japan will get 20,000 fewer PS3 consoles at launch, if a report in local newspaper the Nikkei Keizai Shimbun is to be believed.
That's a reduction of 20% on the original allocation of 100,000 consoles. Hmm. maybe making back a $1.9 billion loss won't be so easy after all?
