So last month, there was a website titled "All I Want for Xmas is a PSP", which was made by two kids named Charlie and Jeremy. Its intentions were for Jeremy's parents to buy him a PSP for Xmas. The site even had Tshirt iron on patterns, YouTube videos of songs about the PSP and even PSP themed greeting cards.
Then this week, word came out that the site was registered to a marketing firm that represented Sony. Suddenly, the site changed dramtically. The YouTube videos and comments sections are gone. Then a posting admitting that the site was a sham.
Here's what they said:
"Busted. Nailed. Snagged. As many of you have figured out (maybe our speech was a little too funky fresh???), Peter isn't a real hip-hop maven and this site was actually developed by Sony. Guess we were trying to be just a little too clever. From this point forward, we will just stick to making cool products, and use this site to give you nothing but the facts on the PSP."
This is awesome! I like how the folks at PSP are allowing their advertisements to be so clever. Sure they are getting in trouble for some of their actions but that also means they are getting more publicity. Brilliant!
Here are some marketing stunts Sony's done in the past:
-Sony had a graffiti campaign in San Fran, New York, LA, Philly and Chicago that had crazy eyed children playing PSPs showing up on sidewalks and buidlings. New York demanded Sony pull the adds and pay $20,000 to the antigraffiti program.
-Sony had PSP ads in the UK that had slogans like, "Strong language and scenes of a sexual nature here" and "Saucy emails won't get you fired here".
-With the debut of the white PSP, Sony had ads of a white woman wearing all white grabbing a black woman by the jaw and a tagline "Playstation Portable White is coming". This was pulled when accustions of racism arised.
Way to get the word out Sony! Go here if you want to check the site out for yourself.
