PS3 - What was updated? What Wasn't? After the Honeymoon

So the PS3 has been out for a while now and from what I can tell, many people are stil disappointed with its performance.

However there are a growing few, like me, who see the future potential of this console. That is, once the bugs are fixed and some of the other promises kept it wil truly be the best console on the market.

But until then, we can relish in this review of the PS3 by Arstechnica. In it we learn of some of the problems associated with the next-gen console including Sony's apparent lack of communication as well as its gaming strategy which, while succeeding online is failing in retail stores.

However, like the Wii and Xbox they too have finally embraced the idea that perhaps we don't need discs? Perhaps a game can be served fully online? Only time will tell.

Personally I think a streaming game, just like streaming video, is destined to happen. It's just a matter of who will do it first and when.

In the past few days we've also heard of some recent updates to the PS3. but with the above noted communication issues, no one seems to know exactly what the update does.

While no one knows the entire story, many are claiming that the update has fixed the issue with PS1 and PS2 games playing properly on the PS3.

However they still aren't able to natively upscale games to 1080i yet.

This could soon be an issue of the past because according to this article there is an SDK out there which developers can tap into to take care of some of the upscaling required.

Some but not all, but hey, it's a start right?

Now of course, this won't help with current games, but perhaps developers who've started titles for the PS3 or who are still developing PS2 tiles can now build in the upscaling into the games in case someone buys the PS2 game for their PS3.

Finally, in international PS3 news, Kotaku is reporting details of the long awaited European launch of the console. The important details are:

Launch date: March 23rd
Price: £425
Units: 1 million, 60GB model only, with the 20GB model to follow later
Line-up: 30 games, including disc-based and network titles

I think the European launch will go smoother than the North American one, don't you?

And, oh yeah, if you live in Canada, Sony didn't raise the price of the PS3. That was apparently an action taken by individual retailers.
