The Nintendo Conspiracy

So it's been almost 6 months and its still impossible to find a Wii. Back when I got mine I thought I was relatively lucky but I also felt, as did many people, that within a few weeks Wiis would be as plentiful as Xboxes.

But here we are in April and there are still no Wiis on store shelves. That despite the fact that Nintendo claims to have shipped over 8 million units.

So the question I pose today is this: Is the Wii really a hot commodity or is something more sinister happening?

It is surprising to me that this little console that no one thought would fly is outselilng the competition 2 to 1. Or is it?

I'm surprised conspiracy theorists haven't jumped all over this. But i'm sure there are those who think the Wii is a figment of the imagination just because they haven't seen one. Wouldn't that be the greatest hoax ever - spend millions on advertising. Get people to line up for hours, sometimes days, at a time to buy one of these phantom consoles? (I know, there was a phantom console that turned out to be vaporware, but that's probably what some people think of the Wii).

But I'm here to tell you that they do exist. So since they do exist why are they so hard to find?

Well, I have a couple conspiracy theories of my own.

First, and most obvious, is that Nintendo is purposely under producing the console to keep demand and interest up. After all, if they were to flood the market with Wiis the interest wouldn't have been as high as it is now.

This way Nintendo can almost guarantee sales for as long as they want. Does that mean they have already shipped over 8 million units? Far more than their competitors? I'd say yes. They are trying to keep up. And if you look at the company's history - well over 100 years of it - they are an honorable company that is trying to do what it can.

So if they have shipped that many units what then? Could consumers really have bought all of them?

Well this is where theory #2 comes in: That Microsoft and Sony are buying up as many as they can in order to boost sales of their own consoles.

Think about it for a second - you are the maker of the PS3 which, by all initial accounts sucked, or the Xbox which had a year lead on the other two so had lost its glamour. What would you do? Especially when you see that the Wii is so hot out of the gate.

Why, snatch up as many as you could, hoping that anxious customers would say "screw it" and buy your own console.

Really, it makes sense for Microsoft to do this after all the Xbox is proven and has recieved good reviews whereas the PS3 has recieved lacklustre reviews until lately. Plus MM$ has the bankroll to do this.

Imagine that - a warehouse full of Wiis just gathering dust somewhere on Microsoft's Redmond campus. If this is the case then my next prediction would be that M$ will flood the market with Wiis soon, lowering demand and leaving stores stuck with them while people realize the Xbox is a superior gaming console and, instead, shell out an extra $75 for it. Of course if this were to happen they risk losing customers of theirs who were going to buy a Xbox instead opting for the less expensive Wii.

Whether each of these conspiracies is true I'll leave up to you, but it does open up some intriguing possibilities. And wno knows, maybe I'm right on one of them?
