Nintendo Announces WiiWare

There are many news reports coming out today telling us of WiiWare, a new initiative from Nintendo.

WiiWare is a service which will focus on original titles like those found on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. And the best part is, Nintendo is opening WiiWare up to not only big developers like EA but also indie developers.

WiiWare will be posted on the Wii Shop channel and, as with other Wii Shop products, it will cost you Wii points to download the games.

The nice thing is the inclusion of indie developers. Imagine what options will be out there when these guys get their hands dirty?

Is it a GameCube in a Tissue Box or Tissue in a GameCube

Both actually. I'd give you the URL but it's for a chinese site.

Somebody was bored one day (I guess? What other reason would there be for doing this?) and took his Gamecube out of the case and swapped it with tissue.

Now the Gamecube is in a tissue box while the tissue is in the Gamecube case.

Don't believe me? Check out the video:

PS3 as a Media Center Plus?

PS3 software engineers, SCE chief technology officer Kawanishi and AV manager Kanehide have been quoted as saying that the update potential via firmware updates for the PS3 is virtually unlimited (except of course by the hard drive space).

They even took a shot over the bow of the 360 hinting that the PS3 could be so much more including, I predict, a media center.

PS3: Development harder but is it worth it?

According to a lengthy report by Dr. Dobb's Portal, game development for the PS3 is significantly more difficult than the Xbox for many reasons.

The primary reason, however, has to do with the Cell architecture. While it is infinitely superior to the PC based architecture in terms of performance and ability, it is still much harder for developers to build games for.

While in a normal situation a game designer would build for a platform and then port the game (IE build for PC then port to console) this becomes much more difficult for the PS3.

Sony claims that the difficulty is worth it as the developer ultimately has much more flexibility in terms of being able to add more richer features to the game, however there would be a cost involved with that.

Streaming Media With Your Wii

Yes it is possible finally. And the solutions ARE NOT from Nintendo (unfortunately). Of course if you wait you may see an N-built media solution, but until then these are great options.

First is the tutorial for streaming music to your Wii via iTunes. It looks pretty straight forward and requires the Opera browser (a free download for your Wii). You also need an application called MyTunesRSS.

But if you're like me you want more than just iTunes, you want it all. So today I came across this great application. It's called "Wii Media Center X" and as the name suggests it will allow your Wii to connect to a media center to watch movies (currently FLV only), view pictures, listen to MP3's and even browse files.

So there you go, a couple early media options for your Wii.

Will Microsoft have a Handheld Gaming Console?

I recently got a Nintendo DS, so I've been doing some research on it (thanks to Portable Gaming World for all the great info!). There's really a lot of great applications available now, and even more in the future, including the recently released web browser.

But in addition to the cool DS features, we've already heard how Nintendo will be building in cross functionality between the DS and Wii so that they can perhaps share games (as with the forthcoming Sims). But I can see a lot more potential here.
